Westmalle Tripel comes from the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle, located near Antwerp, Belgium. It was founded in 1794 by monks fleeing southern France due to the unrest sparked by the French Revolution. The beers they produced began to be marketed in 1860, and in 1920 they founded the brewery. Westmalle Tripel is known as the "Mother of Triples" as it is the first of this style brewed in Belgium.
